Some Pharisees went to warn Jesus that he should leave the area, because Herod wanted him dead. Some Pharisees were sympathetic to Jesus’ mission, others were not. We don’t know if this was a warning to drive Jesus away, or if it was out of genuine concern for his safety. Herod had John the Baptist beheaded, and some thought Jesus was John the Baptist back from the dead. Regardless of the nature of this warning, the danger was all too real.
